There’s no doubt about it – Pantone is the expert when it comes to colour. So, every year, interior and design aficionados wait with bated breath to hear Pantone’s pick for the colour that will define the year to come. Vivid greens, pretty pastels and bright reds and oranges have all been given a mention in the annual announcements, but this year things have taken a different turn.
For 2018, Pantone has selected the “inventive and imaginative” colour ‘Ultra Violet’. Colour number 18-3838 (to be precise), Ultra Violet was selected by the Pantone Colour Institute for its ability to inspire creativity and promote mindfulness.
“We are living in a time that requires inventiveness and imagination, and it is this kind of creative inspiration that is indigenous to Ultra Violet,” says Pantone Colour Institute executive director Leatrice Eiseman. “From exploring new technologies and the greater galaxy, to artistic expression and spiritual reflection, intuitive Ultra Violet lights the way to what is yet to come.”
A blue-tinged purple, Ultra Violet doesn’t exactly scream ‘easy to decorate with’ like some of its predecessors (interior designers heaved a collective sigh of relief when ‘Sand Dollar’ was announced as the 2006 Colour of the Year). But, when used sparingly and carefully, deep purples like this one can create incredible elegance. Paired with charcoal, mustard yellows or natural woods, this colour can be used to either pop or blend harmoniously and is best suited to large couches and armchairs. Quite the regal colour, purple also looks great in ornate rug patterns, on lampshades or in a throw rug or cushion. And don’t be afraid to pair purple with even more purple – Ultra Violet looks lovely with cool-toned lilac, but be sure to break them up with much lighter and brighter colours to avoid having your room look like it belongs to Willy Wonka!
Overall, Ultra Violet is well-suited to 2018 – a year that will hopefully include even more inventiveness, imagination and creative inspiration than the last.
