The Blind, Awning and Shutter Dictionary
- Awning
- An external roof-like canopy that extends from a fixed wall to provide shelter from the weather. Awnings do not need coucil approval and can be fixed or retractable.
- Awning Motorisation
- Automated process that allows awning to be smoothly extended or retracted at the touch of a button. This can prolong the life of the awning.
- Blades
- A horizontal slat of wood, aluminium or other material used to make a blind. Typically refers to the components of a venetian blind.
- BMAA
- Blind Manufacturers' Association of Australia.
- Holland Blind
- The same as a roller blinds. A internal blind that rolls vertically down a window.
- Mermet
- A leading manufacturer of sunscreen fabrics.
- Panel Glide
- A window dressing composed of a series of vertical moving panels/screens that can be manipulated to glide horizontally along a set of tracks.
- Pelmet
- A covering at the top of a curtain or blind to hide the rail.
- Roman Blinds
- A continuous blind that will gather at the bottom when raised.
- Sun Blind
- The same as an external awning.
- Shutters
- Window or door treatments that feature horizontal slats (blades) made typically from timber or aluminium.
- Somfy
- A leading company responsible for motorisation solutions.
- Tassel
- Cords used to manipulate blinds that are bound together at the end.
- UPF Rating
- Ultraviolet Protection Factor. A rating similar to SPF, but used in relation of fabrics.
- Venetian Blind
- A window dressing made up of horizontal material (including fabric, wood and aluminium) fixed together with cords.
- Vertical Drapes
- A vertical blind made up of many strips of material.
